Tool Coatings and Modifications

Extend tool life, optimize cutting speeds, and adapt standard geometries to complex machining challenges with fast-turnaround custom engineering.

Cost-Effective Customization

Economical Engineering Solutions for Precision Tooling

Over 30% of standard tools supplied by Rock River Tool include customized modifications. By modifying standard tool geometry, procurement managers and machine shops avoid the prohibitive costs and extended lead times of fully custom-engineered tooling while achieving targeted machining performance.

Key Advantages of Tool Modifications

  • Eliminate Secondary Operations: Combine drilling, chamfering, or reaming into a single multi-step tool pass.
  • Short Lead Times: Rapid turnaround on altered standard tools compared to custom production runs.
  • Material-Specific Optimization: Modify rake, relief, and corner radii to suit abrasive, tough, or sticky workpieces.
  • Enhanced Drive & Holding: Customize shanks with flats, tangs, or reduced diameters for precise toolholder fitting.
  • Cost Savings: Maximize wear resistance while keeping per-unit tooling expenditure minimal.

Engineered Modification Capabilities

Our USA facility provides full in-house grinding, modifications, and surface treatments. Whether adapting a standard tool to fit space constraints or adjusting geometry for high-temperature alloys, our application engineers oversee every dimension.

Optional Modifications by Product Family

Explore precise geometric modifications designed to resolve chatter, chip packing, tool clearance, and rapid edge wear across our standard tool lines.

Drill Modifications

  • Intermediate cutting diameters to eliminate reaming steps.
  • Special points: 135° split point for tough steels; 90° point for soft materials.
  • Double point angles to minimize burr development upon breakout.
  • Flat or tang shanks for positive non-slip mechanical driving.
  • Shortened shanks to reduce set-up runout and vibration.
  • Extra long shanks for deep-pocket reach requirements.
  • Reduced shank diameters and undersized Morse tapers.

Reamer Modifications

  • Intermediate sizes ground to exact decimal specifications.
  • Tightened tolerances: down to +.0002" or +.0001" on diameter.
  • Precision grinding down to 30 micro-inch finish or better.
  • Custom chamfer angles (e.g., 31° to match 118° drill point).
  • End-cutting 180° flat-bottom reamer chamfers.
  • Corner radius additions to strengthen tips in abrasive metals.
  • Special OD relief and altered circular margin widths.

Counterbore Modifications

  • Custom intermediate cutting diameters ground to print.
  • Precision diameter tolerances tighter than standard .001".
  • Non-180° chamfers for combined piloted countersinking.
  • Corner radius additions to improve surface finish and fatigue life.
  • Diameter step-downs for multi-tier counterboring.
  • Drive flats, tangs, and shortened/reduced shank styles.

End Mill Modifications

  • Special decimal cutting diameters for tight keyways and slots.
  • Corner radii to prevent tip chipping and enhance part radius strength.
  • High-precision OD grinding to restricted shank tolerances.
  • Undersized shank options for specific holder adaptabilities.

Keyseat Cutter Modifications

  • Intermediate face widths and specific cutter diameters.
  • Corner radii additions on cutter teeth for fillet requirements.
  • Neck diameter reductions for deep slot clearance.
  • Weldon flats added to shanks for rigid toolholding.

Slitting Saw & Milling Cutters

  • Ultra-tight face width and outer diameter tolerances.
  • Alternating tooth chamfers for aggressive chip breaking.
  • Full radii and dual-side edge chamfering.
  • Precision matched cutter sets for gang milling assemblies.
Advanced Surface Engineering

High-Performance PVD Wear Coatings

Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) applies hard ceramic coatings without exceeding tempering temperatures, maintaining the full core toughness of the steel tool body while dramatically increasing surface hardness.

Titanium Nitride

TiN Coating

The standard multi-purpose coating for machining carbon steels, alloy steels, and cast iron. Reduces friction and prevents material buildup on the cutting edge.

Hardness: ~86 Rc (2300 HV)
Max Temp: 600°C / 1110°F
Friction Coeff: 0.40
Titanium Carbonitride

TiCN Coating

Harder than TiN with a lower friction coefficient. Highly effective for abrasive materials, tough stainless steels, and cast iron where mechanical wear is primary.

Hardness: ~94 Rc (3000 HV)
Max Temp: 400°C / 750°F
Friction Coeff: 0.25
Titanium Aluminum Nitride

TiAlN Coating

Excellent thermal stability makes TiAlN ideal for high-speed machining, dry cutting, and abrasive alloys including titanium and aluminum casting alloys.

Hardness: ~89 Rc (2800 HV)
Max Temp: 730°C / 1350°F
Friction Coeff: 0.30
Aluminum Titanium Nitride

AlTiN Coating

An aluminum-rich nano-composite coating engineered for extreme heat and high-feed machining in hardened steels, nickel alloys, and difficult-to-machine materials.

Hardness: ~95 Rc (3300 HV)
Max Temp: 800°C / 1470°F
Friction Coeff: 0.35
